This is the first version of The Legend of Zelda for the NES distributed in Greece. It is an extremely rare and difficult-to-find edition. Specifically, this is the NES-ZL-GPS version imported to Greece by C.ITOH & CO (HELLAS LTD), later Itochu Hellas LTD in 1989.
The History Nintendo imposed a minimum order requirement of 5,000 units for importers to commission a custom localized version with the box and manual printed in the local language. Consequently, countries with smaller market allocations, such as Greece and Portugal, had to purchase the generic European version NES-ZL-GPS (GPS stands for Game Pak Software). The local distributor would then print their own manual in the native language and distribute the game in accordance with local laws.
In Greece, Itochu Hellas LTD produced a high-quality translated map and manual, removing the original GPS materials included with the cart. It is estimated that fewer than 2,000 units were distributed. Today, finding a complete edition is exceptionally difficult, particularly one that includes the map.
Provenance & Condition This is likely the finest Greek NES Legend of Zelda you will see in this condition. I acquired this copy from my friend Lefteris Diplaris’s personal collection in 2022. It was the best example he had seen in over 10 years of collecting; in fact, he previously had the map framed on his wall due to its rarity in this state.
Fortunately, the box retains an original period sticker. I am thrilled about this detail, as it is the quickest way to distinguish this Greek GPS Zelda from a standard GPS copy. There are actually three stickers layered on top of one another. The retailer was named 'Κλασυσάτος' (I have been unable to find further information on Google). The price lists 10,900 Drachmas (GRD), which is equivalent to approximately 32 Euros (EUR) today.
